Feminine Hygiene: To Do or Not To Do?

Feminine hygiene is a pretty contentious topic. While it is widely embraced in contemporary female wellness, it is often slated by healthcare professionals as an unnecessary hygiene practice, only beneficial for superficial cosmetic purposes. Join us as we explore the different types of intimate cleanses and whether they’re worth giving a shot.

Thanks to intelligent marketing and consumerism, the global inclusion of intimate cleansing has formed part of women’s daily hygiene practices for multiple purposes. Some marketing initiatives suggest that intimate cleansing significantly reduces vaginal discharges and infections while balancing pH levels. Others have claimed that intimate washes have long-term benefits such as fragrant odour, smooth skin, and reduced chances of cervical cancer. However, a 1989 German study by the University of Wurzburg suggests that there are no verifiable health benefits to intimate cleansing and that vaginal douching, for instance, may undermine the innate immune defences by disrupting ordinary vaginal flora and increasing the risk of infections.

Feminine hygiene products make women feel ashamed of their intimate parts and exploit those insecurities for monetary gain. While the following feminine hygiene products may have relative popularity, it is important not to feel pressured into using them due to marketing pressures and instead consult with your healthcare provider for expert advice.

Vaginal Douching

Vaginal douching may provide a sense of freshness and cleanliness. Some women find it helpful for managing certain odours, although the best way to manage odours is to focus on diet regulation and pH levels. However, it’s essential to note that excessive douching can disrupt the natural balance of the vagina, leading to irritation, infections, and an increased risk of complications. Most healthcare professionals recommend against routine douching.

Intimate wash or cleansers

Specially formulated intimate washes can help maintain pH balance and provide a gentle cleanse. Opt for fragrance-free formulae to prevent irritation. However, using regular soap or scented cleansers can disrupt the natural flora and cause irritation. It’s crucial to choose a product specifically designed for intimate use. It’s advised to use it with discretion.

Wet Wipes or Tissues

Wet wipes are convenient for on-the-go freshness, especially during menstruation or after exercise. Some wipes may contain harsh chemicals or fragrances that can cause irritation. Using them excessively may disrupt the natural pH balance and lead to discomfort.

Warm Water Cleansing:

Simple and effective, warm water is a gentle option for daily cleansing and is arguably the safest option for intimate cleansing. While generally safe, excessive washing even with water alone can strip the vagina of its natural lubrication and protective layer, potentially leading to dryness or irritation.

Bathing and Regular Hygiene

Bathing with mild, unscented soap helps maintain overall cleanliness. Prolonged exposure to soapy water can cause dryness, and fragranced soaps may lead to irritation. It’s crucial to rinse thoroughly to avoid residue.

Most important to remember is that the vagina has a self-cleaning mechanism, and routine use of certain cleansing methods may not be necessary. It’s crucial to listen to your body, choose products carefully, and when in doubt, consult with a healthcare professional. Everyone’s body is different, and what works for one person may not work for another. Always prioritise gentle, pH-balanced products and maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your feminine hygiene practices.
